Asbestosis vs. Mesothelioma
The key similarity between asbestosis and mesothelioma is that they are both caused by exposure to asbestos, a toxic material used widely in construction until the 1970s. Additionally, the two conditions may have similar symptoms. However, that is where the similarities end.
Asbestosis is much milder than mesothelioma. It is a respiratory infection that can be well-managed with treatment. Mesothelioma, on the other hand, is an often fatal form of cancer that can affect multiple areas of the body.
These two conditions also differ in where they form. Asbestosis is limited to the lungs and respiratory tract, while mesothelioma can form in the pleural tissue lining the outside of the lungs and can damage structures in the heart or diaphragm.
While asbestosis is incurable, a person with asbestosis can live for decades with the condition if it is managed well. On the other hand, the average life expectancy for mesothelioma is 12-21 months after diagnosis. This is because mesothelioma is often not diagnosed until the later stages of the disease when symptoms present themselves.
