There are numerous research studies being conducted worldwide regarding mesothelioma. Let’s look over some of the updates that happened as recently as last month.

Mayo Clinic Opens New Clinical Trial

In June 2021, the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota opened a new clinical trial for mesothelioma. The potential treatment combines a newly approved immunotherapy treatment with targeted radiation. In the past, immunotherapy has been found to help individuals with mesothelioma. This clinical trial hopes to combine benefits of immunotherapy and radiation to achieve great success.

Breath Analysis To Predict Treatment Outcomes

Researchers in the Netherlands are working to save patients from unnecessary treatment side effects. Currently, researchers are working on figuring out if breath analysis can predict who will respond well to treatment before it even begins. This will help make treatment more efficient, and more likely to provide a positive outcome.

Radiation Before vs. After Surgery

An analysis of over 1,500 malignant mesothelioma cases found that radiation before surgery increased chances of survival and radiation after surgery had a much smaller positive effect.

Radiation has many negative side effects, such as:

  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Damage to otherwise healthy cells

Therefore, this study questions if it is worth doing radiation therapy post-surgery.

ONCOS-102 Vaccine

Preliminary results from the ONCOS-102 clinical trial are promising. When combined with chemotherapy, this vaccine showed a survival rate of up to two years. Chemotherapy alone showed a survival rate of just over one year.

Pediatric Peritoneal Mesothelioma

While mesothelioma typically affects older individuals, there are some young people who are diagnosed. However, one surgery specifically has shown great results for pediatric cases. Cytoreduction with HIPEC is an intense surgery, but has one of the highest survival rates.
