Because mesothelioma is a form of cancer, like other cancers, it can go into remission. We investigate how often this happens and the prognosis for those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a cancer that causes a dangerous lining around the lungs, stomach, heart, or other organs. It is most directly linked with exposure through inhalation or swallowing of asbestos.

How Serious is Mesothelioma?

Depending on when doctors identify mesothelioma in a patient can make a difference when it comes to the patient’s outlook. While most undergo treatment to alleviate pain and potential spreading of the disease, there is no current cure for mesothelioma.

Is Remission Possible?

Not all hope should be lost for those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. As with all other types of cancer, they can run the risk of returning because of small, undetectable amounts of the disease in the body. That’s why doctors can not say there is a cure for mesothelioma, but there have been countless individuals who have been and are in remission. There is not a set number of how often remission happens as each diagnosis is different from the next.

Patients who are in remission with their cancer can be in full or partial remission — this is also the case for those who have mesothelioma. Full remission of mesothelioma is extremely rare. Usually, those who are in full remission had the mesothelioma detected early on and the cancer did not spread to other parts of the body. While someone may feel because they’re in full remission that they’re cured of the cancer, that is simply not true because there is no guarantee that the cancer will never come back.

Partial remission is more common for those who were diagnosed early on and have been able to rid their body of most of the cancer. The end result will leave the patient feeling significantly better compared to when they started treatment.

Recurrence

Because a person can not be cured of mesothelioma, doctors who have a favorable outlook for the patient can treat them as if the patient has a chronic illness. This gives the patient frequent checkups with doctors so they can have their symptoms monitored. This also allows for doctors to quickly prepare a course of treatment if symptoms get worse.
