Read on to learn more of the things you should know about mesothelioma.

An Overview of Mesothelioma

According to the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), “Malignant mesothelioma is a cancer of the thin tissue (mesothelium) that lines the lung, chest wall, and abdomen.”

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is very aggressive and rare. It develops in the thin layer of tissue that surrounds most of your internal organs, referred to as the mesothelium.

The most common form of the disease is pleural mesothelioma, which is found in the lining of the lungs.

Most People With Mesothelioma Report Being Exposed to Asbestos

According to the American Lung Association, “Eight out of 10 people with mesothelioma report asbestos exposure, which is why it is considered the biggest risk factor of developing the disease.”

There are about 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma each year in the United States. While the treatments available to mesothelioma patients are getting better, the ailment remains an aggressive and fatal cancer.
