Section IV: The Mesothelioma Survival Rate Is Different Based on Demographics
Unfortunately, the mesothelioma survival rate is low because the nature of the illness is not to present serious symptoms until the victim is in the last stages of the disease. Less than 50 percent of patients receiving a mesothelioma diagnosis survive their first year.
The mesothelioma survival rate also depends on other demographic factors such as age, cancer stage, cancer type, race and gender. There are not many long-term survivors. There are several factors that affect the mesothelioma survival rate. Age is a determinant in that over 50 % of patients diagnosed before the age of 50 make the one year mark but less than 33% of patients 75 or older will make the one year mark.
Gender also plays a role in that research has shown that the five year mesothelioma survival rate for men is 4.5%. It is 13.4 % for women.
