Asbestos

The American Cancer Society has stated that 80% of mesothelioma cases are directly formed from asbestos exposure. Asbestos can enter a body two ways:

  • Inhaling – this is how a majority of asbestos enters the body. Asbestos can be found microscopically in the air if openly exposed. Many older buildings have asbestos in them and if they are demolished or renovated, asbestos can go into the air. This is why demolition or renovation crews will usually not only wear protective suits to shield potential asbestos away from them but will also wait several days after potential asbestos is exposed or removed before they continue with construction.

  • Swallowing – while not as common, it is possible for asbestos fibers to be swallowed. This usually occurs if asbestos has been contaminated in food or liquids (for example, an asbestos deposit close to a water source). Another way asbestos can be swallowed is if people cough asbestos that’s been inhaled and then they swallow their saliva.

Because of the direct link between asbestos and mesothelioma, there is no safe amount of exposure to asbestos. A person has a greater chance of developing mesothelioma every time they are exposed to asbestos.

What Else Can Cause Mesothelioma?

While someone may not have had direct exposure to asbestos, other factors could lead that person to develop mesothelioma.

For example, if someone lives in a home with someone who works around asbestos, by being in close proximity to that affected person, someone could get their own exposure to asbestos. This is due to asbestos being in the air and someone inhaling the fibers.

Another risk factor researchers are looking into is to see if family history could make someone more susceptible to developing mesothelioma. While more research is needed, if a parent, sibling, or child has mesothelioma it could increase the risk for the cancer with other family members.

Researchers are also investigating whether radiation therapy could lead to mesothelioma. Those who have had radiation therapy for other cancers of the chest may have an increased risk of mesothelioma.
