Can We Expect Mesothelioma To Be Gone In The Future? | Shrader Law

As more details came out regarding the dangers of asbestos around the second half of the 1900s, more people started to recognize the impact of mesothelioma.

It’s not a long-term condition as most diagnoses come in the later stages of the disease because of the extensive latency period. As such, the prognosis typically gives the patient months to live. Even then, the disease significantly diminishes the patient’s quality of life, and it’s hard to enjoy the little time they have left.

Over the years, there were hopes that the added awareness about mesothelioma would lead to decreasing numbers. People should be aware of the dangers, and the condition would disappear. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear like mesothelioma will be gone anytime soon.

Mesothelioma Cases Per Year

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of new mesothelioma cases each year has only increased. In 2004, the United States had 1,783 cases of pleural mesothelioma. Fast-forward 10 years to 2014 and that number rises to 1,961.

Between 2012 and 2016, an average of 3,253 new cases occurred each year.

Roughly 70 to 80 percent of all cases involve pleural mesothelioma. When you factor this in, it’s clear to see the numbers have increased even further. In 2016, there would have been an estimated 2,100 to 2,500 pleural mesothelioma cases.

What makes this so dangerous? If asbestos has stricter regulations, why are there more cases?

Unfortunately, there’s no answer to this as of now. We’re watching as more individuals suffer, and all that’s available is treatment. No cure. No way to save the life of a mesothelioma patient—the only option is to prolong it.

For the family of a mesothelioma patient, this can be a difficult time. Understand that your loved one has legal rights. Or, if you lost a loved one to mesothelioma, your family has options. You must use your voice and stand up to those responsible.
